Walk with a Heart of Integrity

I will carefully attend to the blameless way. When will You come to me? I will walk within my house in the integrity of my heart Psalm 101:2 NASB

Having a heart of integrity connotes having a clear conscience. David is walking in his house with a morally pure heart. He does this by carefully paying attention to the ways that prove to be blameless. In other words, David is walking in such a way that if he was brought before court, his accusers would have nothing to accuse him of, he is innocent.

How does David walk blamelessly? David’s actions and behaviors enable him to walk blamelessly.

  1. I will not set anything worthless before my eyes; I hate the work of those who fall away; It shall not cling to me (v.3). David is not going to set anything before him that is worthless. In God’s eyes an idol was considered worthless, having no value. David looks at idolatry from God’s lens. Although many within Israel had fallen away from following the LORD to serve idols, even going as far as to set them up in their homes to bow down and worship them with their hearts, David would do no such thing. His heart is attuned to the LORD and no other. Consider this in your own life, if it does not edify or build up should you be setting it before your eyes. Does what you set before your eyes cause a stumbling block for you or those around you? Could what you set before your eyes potentially cause you to fall away?
  2. A perverse heart shall leave me; I will know no evil (v.4). David was not going to tolerate having people within his home whose heart was crooked, whose way was perverted. As the king of Israel at the time, David could have had all manner of people in his immediate circle to influence him. He was unwilling to be influenced by the evil counsel of someone whose heart was twisted, whose motives were impure, who was not walking with the LORD (Proverbs 22:5; 28:6). Consider who you take counsel from and who you invite into your immediate circle of influence. If their ways are crooked, turn away from them.
  3. David surrounds himself with people who walk blamelessly. He removes the evil and perverse from him and installs those who walk blamelessly to serve him: “He who walks in a blameless way is the one who will minister to me” (v.6b). “He who practices deceit shall not dwell within my house; He who speaks falsehood shall not maintain his position before me” (v.7). We do well to surround ourselves with those who walk blamelessly and speak truthfully.
