Some things to take to School with You!

School started a couple weeks ago and in the after first principles class, they asked for prayers on their behalf because they were being ridiculed by their peers and even some teachers for the faith. With wisdom beyond their age, they didn’t ask that the incidents or persecution end, but rather that they continue to have boldness and keep quite or hide their light when confronted. What a great mind set to have. And with that in mind I thought I want to give you some things to take with you that will help you to stand firm and to be bold.

The first one is your purity. There are temptations around every corner and at school it is no different. Paul writes in 1st Timothy 5:22 “Do not lay hands on anyone hastily, nor share in other people’s sins; keep yourself pure.” Let others know that no matter what they do or say that your mind is made, and you are going to stay pure.

Your honesty is another thing that you need to take with you. Honesty is always the best policy. Let your yes be yes and your no be no and allow no doubt. Always speak the truth and there will be no doubt where you stand. The pull or desire to cheat at times can be great. It doesn’t matter what the reason is, cheating will destroy your honesty. Proverbs 12:17 says “An honest witness tells the truth, but a false witness tells lies.” Let us always be an honest witness

Your good influence is another thing to have. No matter where you are, even school, you are the salt of the earth and the light of the world as Jesus tells us in Matthew 5:13-16. When we are conducting ourselves as salt and light, we have the opportunity to influence those who haven’t yet turned to Christ or haven’t been told the Gospel at all. You set and be the standard and not allow anyone else to influence you.

Your modest dress is another thing to always take with you. Paul writes in 1st Timothy 2:9 “in like manner also, that the women adorn themselves in modest apparel.” I know not everyone is going to follow this rule but that doesn’t give you an excuse not to dress modestly. Dressing lewdly or revealing can turn into a multitude of different sexual sin, not just us to sin but others. And we shouldn’t be trying to cause others to sin more, but less. This is another area where your good influence could help others as well.

Your resistance is the last one we will talk about today. James 4:7 tells us “therefore submit to God. Resist the devil and he will flee from you.” There are going to be times where we will be tempted to drink, do drugs, smoke, us foul language and many other things as well, but stand firm. Do not give in to peer pressure. And please do not try to fool yourselves with the one time, won’t hurt story to yourself.  No one ever woke up an alcoholic one day, it started with one drink. Most of the time after you refuse once, they won’t ask again. Who knows, maybe your good influence by resisting the temptation might give someone else the courage to do the same.
